The 57 journalists and media men were in Maguindanao, a province in Mindanao Island, to cover the filing of certificates of candidacy of Buluan Vice Mayor Toto Mangudadatu and Mangudadatu Vice Mayor Eden Mangudadatu. They were on their way to the Commission on Elections office when they were ambushed by police officers and armed civilians.
